In the movie Iron Man we see a good number of Arabic stereotypes. At the beginning of the movie it immediately starts off with Arabic's being portrayed as terrorist. Though out the movie we see violence have to do with the Arabic portrayal of terrorist, warlords and murders.
Robert Downey Jr. portrays Tony Stark, a playboy billionaire arms dealer. His father worked on the Manhattan Project and his company, Stark Enterprises, arms the Pentagon. Stark couldn't be prouder of the work he does: When an obnoxious reporter criticizes him for being a merchant of death, he gives as good as he gets, noting that whoever has the biggest stick dictates the terms of peace. A genius at weapons development, Downey's Stark is clearly someone who takes great pride in his country and himself.
That all changes when, in the midst of a missile demonstration in the mountains of Afghanistan, Stark is captured by terrorists. Director Jon Favreau goes to great lengths to portray them as an odd international band one of the terrorists speaks Hungarian, for example but they're a clear stand-in for al Qaeda and the Taliban. Determined to make Stark build a weapons system capable of leveling an entire city, the terrorists treat him roughly submerging his head in water, slapping him around but Stark resists. Until, that is, he discovers that the terrorists already have their hands on some of Stark Enterprise's finest hardware.
Terrorist: Radical who employs terror as a political weapon; usually organizes with other terrorists in small cells; often uses religion as a cover for terrorist activities.
Victims: An unfortunate person who suffers from some adverse circumstance.
Prisoners: A person in a correctional institution where persons are confined while on trial or for punishment.
It is sad to see that the media is misrepresenting Arab Stereotypes. The media is stereotyping and portraying Arabs as terrorist, crazy and religious, when Arabs are just the same as us. The media is using the Cultivation Theory: states that television shows contain lots of information embedded in its ‘stories’. A lot of times the TV portrays a version of life, culture and the larger world that are very different from what really is. Heavy television viewers tend to use the TV stories to shape their own views of the world.
