Times Union Content Analysis

From September 5th through the 11th I content analyzed the Florida Times Union. This is a simple break down by race categories and gender. The statistics that have been sampled are from a 7 day study overlooking the number of races and genders, which featured a picture on the first page and metro section of the Florida Times Union.

As it is seen in the research African Americans are underrepresented and also misrepresented in the media. From looking at our study we see that their are more African American men in photos then African American females. Even though the number for both genders are very low, we still see that most African American men are more then likely to be in a photography for the Florida Times Union then women. African Americans are being portrayed as criminals or are just seen as sports figures.

There is hardly any coverage on Asians, Hispanics, and other minorities. Just as the African Americans, Hispanics and other races are rarely seen on the cover of the newspaper. Hispanics are being imaged as criminals or the only other time you hear about them is if there is an immigration issue. These are minorities groups being judged, misheard and abandoned by the media that is doing a horrible job voicing the voice of other.

Now that we are looking at this research we see were the schema theory could take place. The Florida Times Union has been portraying images that do not correctly represent the race. This hurts society because they begin to stereotype and give off a fear of danger due to the lack of good media.
